Somalia in Olympics 2008: Samia's Father, Uncle and Aunt Killed by Ethiopian Rocket Attacks

Samia Yusuf Omar is the women's 200m runner representing Somalia in the 2008 Olympics.  Samia recently let the world know, despite its troubles, Somalia is still alive when she walked in Beijing with Somalia's Olympic team as they waved the Blue Back with White star Somali flag.

Unfortunately, Samia's father died in 2006 by Ethiopian shelling in Mogadishu.  He, Samia's Uncle and Aunt were victims on the indiscriminate killings by the Ethiopian soldiers that hold the Mogadishu citizens hostages as they bomb them with heavy artilary in retaliation whenever they have anti-Ethiopian fighters engage them.

Although she was not asked about her father's death, Samia was asked how she survived the constant fighting in Mogadishu while she managed to train for the Olympics.

"Some people ask how I can be doing sport when so many people are being killed or dying from famine and drought, but being in the Olympics is doing something for my country because everyone will support me regardless of their tribal affiliation."

Somali blogs and news  will keep you posted on any additional reports coming of out of Mogadishu about this story.
